This is a little post showing you a bit of the area around where we live and a few of its quirks. Click here to take a tour of the hospital grounds.
Disclaimer: Almost all of these photos were taken while driving, to be as inconspicuous as possible, so please ignore the bad photo quality.
Something that struck us on the day that we arrived at Tonga was how big the houses are, but also how so many of them are still being built. It seems like people are probably just building as they can, since many of the unfinished houses are being lived in.
There is also a lot of building material for sale along the road. Columns seem to be a big thing here.
Something strange with the houses though is that many seems to have windows in upside down. Well, in our opinion at least the round part should be at the top, but maybe we are the ones who are wrong?
Along with the nice houses, come very fancy cars. Brand new Mercedez Benzs, Golf 5s etc. Along with the fancy cars some many car washes.
The main road to Tonga is surprisingly good, although some drivers are particularly not so good. The last kilometer to the hospital is pretty bad though. It was tarred once upon a time, but now you just pick the best route as you go. The potholes have been filled with ground twice (i think) since we got here but then it rains and the quick fix no longer makes any difference. (This picture isn’t the worst part of the road)
Even on the good roads though, you really do have to look out for cows.
This is the view from one of the farms that we have had the privilege of being invited to.
The area really is beautiful and as time goes on we will stop the car to try and get some better photos, but I hope that for now this gives you a better idea of what the place looks like.
